Chester Amazons reach Volleyball England Shield Final

Chester Amazons from Division 3 North of the National League played host to North Riding Eagles of Division 2 in the Shield semi-final at Whitby High School on Sunday 1 March.

A good crowd of supporters from both teams saw a very competitive match that fluctuated several times before the outcome was decided.

Chester started with six winning serves from Becca Kitchen that created a solid  platform. ‎Chester maintained the service pressure to keep clear water throughout the set to close it out 25-16.

Second set saw a role reversal and North Riding went 5-2 and 8-3 up. Chester re-grouped and fought back point by point to be 14-16 down at the second technical time out. Kristina Podholicka served Chester to a 20-18 lead. Positive attack play from Liz Quinn and Michelle Chan saw the set won 25-22.

That good position soon evaporated as Chester went 0-5 down and concentration levels seemed to drop and errors crept in. Despite a spirited response Chester could not stem the tide and the set was lost 16-25.

Coach  Lenny Barry asked the players to pull together and return to the game plan that had been successful at the start. Good serving from Jana de Brandt and Vanessa Barry set the scene and saw Amazons move from eight all to a commanding 20-15 lead. North Riding fought point for point but Chester's resolve was not to be weakened and went on to win the set 25-19 to take the match by three sets to one.

Chester thus progress to the National Finals in Kettering on Saturday 28 March where they will take on Division 1 side Ashcombe Dorking who will provide the toughest test to date.

First time in many years that a team has made Senior National Finals so w‎e wish Chester Amazons good luck in the Final!!
