Dalston Old Boys VC was established back in the late 70s when there was a thriving local league - with teams from Carlisle, Workington, Barrow, Whitehaven and Kendal.

In 1985 the clubs were all suffering a similar fate - players were leaving the region and so it was decided to amalgamate the players into one NVL team called Dalston Old Boys. The club was based at Caldew School and run by Head of PE Jack Harper Tarr (a father figure to volleyball in Cumbria during the 80s)who was able to encourage youngsters from the school to join the junior section and devoted much time to junior development as well as undertaking secretarial duties for the club.

This set up was very successful for some years - producing good volleyballers and some internationals, too. (Guy and Kevin Scott, John Martindale, Andy Carr and Mathew Jones.)

Over the years a number of coaches contributed to the club’s success: Don Blackwell, Mike Stayman, John Stashkiw, and Gordon Macdonald.

In the early 90’s the club was no longer able to sustain a NVL side, but continued as a recreational club, successfully entering competitions in Perth and Bridlington, for example.

At present there are some 8 - 10 regulars who train on Thursdays from 8 - 10pm at Caldew High School, Dalston, CA5 7NN  under the new club name of Carlisle VC
